The special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Tuesday sentenced Abdul Karim Telgi, kingpin of the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, to seven years’ imprisonment in one of the many cases filed against him.
The court also sentenced Telgi’s aide Uday Sawant, after both of them pleaded guilty.
Special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat said that Mira Road police arrested Pulchand Jain outside Mira Road railway station in August 1999 with postal stamps.
Gharat further said that on August 24, 1999, police arrested Vijay Kadam who disclosed the name of Uday Sawant. Along with arresting Sawant, the police also seized a printing machine owned by Sawant to print the postal stamps.
Sawant’s statement lead to Telgi’s arrest and the police also seized printing machines from him. The total amount of postal stamps seized was more than Rs 47 lakh.
Special Judge Chitra Bedi sentenced Telgi and Sawant and directed Telgi to pay a fine of Rs 20 lakh.
Gharat said that Telgi has already been convicted in 12 cases and five more cases were pending against him.
