On Monday, as the city’s suburbs witnessed the coldest day in January since 2008, Mumbaiites brought out their jackets and mufflers to beat the cold.

“The cold wave has helped me bring out all my winter clothing that was packed way. It is a great opportunity to make a fashion statement,” said Pooja Menon, 21, who works in an advertising agency in Bandra.
The suburbs recorded a minimum temperature of 11 degree Celsius on Monday. Authorities from the weather department also said that the city could face a further dip in temperature in the next two days (see box).
“I went swimming in the morning, but the water was freezing. I just about managed to wet my feet,” said Maitri Bhaskaran, 24, a resident of Vile Parle.
With the mercury expected to dip further, city doctors suggested that people refrain from consuming chilled beverages and cold food. “It is essential to keep sipping on water throughout the day. People should refrain from consuming cold food and beverages as it could cause an infection,” said Dr Mani Iyer, a general physician in Matunga. “People should have hot food and even parents should make sure that their children do not have ice cream and colas,” he added. To prevent the dryness of skin, the doctor also advised regular use of moisturiser and cold creams.
