Volunteers staging demonstrations in favour of the Jan Lokpal bill have launched a postcard campaign to press for their demand.
Thousands of postcards, addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, were distributed at Azad Maidan on Saturday.
The letters ask the PM to pass the Jan Lokpal bill before August 30.
The attempt received good response with a lot of people expressing interest in writing to the PM. “I have studied the government's bill, which is just a waste of time. Therefore I am writing to the PM, asking him to pass the Jan Lokpal bill at the earliest,” said Seema Patel, a Colaba resident and an MBA from the Oxford University.
Likewise, several others wrote to the PM. “Considering the rise in the number of scams being exposed, we need a stringent law to curb corruption. How long will we be a part of this vicious circle? Either the government should take some steps to rectify the system, or accept the civil society's draft after a thorough discussion,” said Smita Pandit, a businesswoman from Grant Road.
The postcards were distributed by group of three engineers, who saw this as their contribution to the movement. “We are not part of any association, but wanted to make some contribution to this movement. We thought this was the best way. We asked people to return the filled postcards, which will be sent to PM's office. We will scan the postcards before posting them, so that no wrong messages go out. Our aim is to ensure only public voice reaches the PMO,” said Prasad Lele, an engineer with a private IT firm.
