The house break-ins took place between 1-2pm on the fifth floor of the six-storey Sai Pushpa society in Yashraj Park, half a kilometre from Kasarwadavli police station on Ghodbunder Road.

While the residents of flat no 501 were away in Rajasthan, the residents of flat no 503 had gone to Vasai for a wedding. Charansingh Lamba, who resides in flat no 504, and his wife were away at work. “We got a call from a neighbour saying our house had been broken into. The thieves broke the lock on our door and stole around 8-10 tolas of gold jewellery and Rs 52,000 cash,” Lamba said.

The Kasarwadavli police station has registered a case of house break-in theft. “We have taken the statement of the residents of one of the flats as the other two families are away. We will add their statement to this complaint. We suspect the watchman of the building is behind this as he has disappeared. Two women saw him talking to a few men. We contacted the security agency but they do not have his photograph nor does the society have any details about him,” said senior police station, Pramod Khade.

Former Thane police commissioner SPS Yadav had even started a drive against unauthorised security agencies. Local police stations had put up notices at residential societies about checking the background of watchmen and the licence of the security agencies before hiring them.
