As the season of sacrifice and fasting began for Christians on Wednesday, city’s youngsters from the community have decided to give up things dearest to them.
During the 40-day Lent season, several young Christians from Mumbai won't update their status on BlackBerry messenger, will stop playing computer games and won’t watch their favourite sitcoms.
“Besides the conventional traditions of abstaining from meat and alcohol, I have decided to sacrifice my online gaming addiction. My parents often complain about me spending too much time online,” said Dusty Lewis, 23, who spends 12 hours a day playing videogames.
While Lewis has vowed to give up on gaming, Charlene Fernandes, 23, is sacrificing his mealtime habit of watching the popular American TV show, Friends. "I find it very difficult to eat my dinner without watching Friends on my laptop. In the bargain, I do not focus on what I eat. I have watched re-runs of the sitcom series more than seven times. Giving up on this obsession will be one of the biggest challenges of my life," said the Marine Lines resident.
Raisa D’mello, 22, a media manager, who is constantly receiving updates from her friends on her BlackBerry messenger has deactivates the service for the next 40 days. “My friends and parents often complain that I am stuck to my phone and do not pay attention to other things," said D'mello. “Although it will not be possible to stay away from my phone for the next six weeks, I have disconnected the instant chat services, which had turned into an addiction.”
