Also trending widely was the hashtag (a way of organising tweets on similar subject) MyNameisMumbai, a play on the name of Shah Rukh Khan’s soon-to-be-released movie that the Sena has been threatened to stop screening.

The hashtag was started by actors Ranvir Shorey and Konkona Sen Sharma late on Tuesday night, with the simple statement: I am an Indian residing in Mumbai. My name is Ranvir. #MyNameIsMumbai.

“The idea was to support Shah Rukh Khan’s and any other individual’s right to express himself without being threatened by the goonlike mentality displayed by some political parties,” Shorey told HT on Wednesday. “Normally, I have no time or inclination to participate in things political. But when matters go out of hand, it’s important to speak up and Twitter gives people like me an opportunity to do so...”

While theatres have taken down posters of the film, on Twitter, people are being encouraged to buy tickets to express support.

Most tweets revolved around the themes of freedom of speech and “Mumbai for all Indians”, the statement that has earned politician Rahul Gandhi Sena’s ire.
