The accused, Prashant Ghag, 36, and Praveen Kamble, 29, approached Shailesh Shah, the owner of a saree shop located at RB Mehta Road on Tuesday.

“The duo, who were carrying electricity testers, told Shah that they were employees of his shop’s electricity provider and had come to check the electricity meter,” the officer added.

The accused checked the meter box and complained to Shah that he had tampered with the meter box, said police.

The accused told Shah to pay Rs1,000 if he did not want a police case to be registered against him. They told Shah that he could collect payment receipt from their Tilak Nagar office.

Suspecting something amiss, Shah informed the police. The duo was not employed with the provider they had claimed to be working for, the police said.
