On March 21, the Yellow Gate police had arrested Akgun Serkat, 31, the captain of MV Kormel, and Ibrahim Mallik Gul, 43, a crew member, after Serkat raised an alarm claiming Gul was an armed “intruder”.

Serkat claimed Gul had entered MV Kormel when it was stationed in Mumbai Port’s inner anchorage. But investigations revealed that Gul was hired as a security guard on the ship, but he was not registered on the list of crew members.

“We have no record of Gul being a crew member of MV Kormel. We also found two pistols on board. We were told that they were given to Gul when he was first appointed as a security guard for MV Kormel,” said Quaiser Khalid, deputy commissioner of police (Port Zone).
