Two elderly sisters, both more than 70 years of age, were found dead at their flat in Chembur’s Sindhi society on Thursday.
While prima facie the police have ruled out foul play in the deaths of Mohini, 72, and Basanti Jethvani, 75, they are investigating if the end was natural or part of a suicide pact. The septuagenarians were unmarried and are not survived by any family members. Their elder brother, who was also unmarried, died a couple of years ago.
Neighbours complained of a foul stench emanating since Wednesday from their sixth-floor one- bedroom flat. They informed the police control room around 11.55am on Thursday. “The elderly sisters had kept a pair of keys with some women who lived in the adjoining building where they would attend satsang (a spiritual discourse). We took the keys and opened the safety door, but the main door was locked from inside and hence we had to break it open,” said a police officer from the Chembur police station.
The police found one of them lying near the door, while the other sister was lying on a sofa. “We found a bit of blood under the body of the sister on the ground. We suspect she may have fallen, while the other sister may have died of shock. A detailed post-mortem report would reveal the exact cause of death,” said the officer.
The police scanned the close-circuit television camera facing the front door and have not found any suspicious movements. “A couple of days ago, one of them had fallen, after which the women in the satsang group had come to their flat to help,” said the officer. The Chembur police have not found any signs of robbery. “The flat was in a bad shape and there were newspapers lying all over,” said the officer. The sisters survived on pension as one of them had retired from the railways.
