The arrested men have been identified as Mehfuz Shaikh (26) and Hareef Ansari (25), both residents of Bandra. Shaikh has a previous case of theft registered against him with the Khar police. The duo was arrested from western railway quarters in Bandra on Tuesday night.

On July 22, Shaikh approached Arjun Sahani (19) — who had failed to secure admission in Thadomal Shahani Engineering College even after having scored 90 per cent in higher secondary examinations — outside the premises of the institution.

“Shaikh told Arjun that he knows a professor named Prabhat from the college who would help him and introduced Ansari posing as the professor,” said Assistant Police Inspector N. Sonawane.

Shaikh demanded Rs three lakh for the admission that Arjun took from his father Girish and gave him on the same day. However, every time Arjun called Shaikh he would guarantee him that his work will be done soon.

A week ago, Arjun went to Thadomal Shahani Engineering College looking for Prabhat and discovered that the faculty did not have anybody with that name.
