Vindo Tambe, 25, a resident of Malwani in Malad, had tried to forcibly have intercourse with one of the accused, police said.

Tambe’s body was found on November 8 in the compound of a non-functional government hospital in Charkop.

His face was smashed with a stone. It took the police more than a week to identify the deceased. During investigations, the police learnt that Tambe was frequently seen with two brothers — Mahesh Dubey, 26, and Jeetendra Dubey, 21 — who also reside in the same area and was with them on the day of the incident.

The police tracked the two who first denied any knowledge about their friend’s disappearance and murder. However, during interrogation, they admitted to having killed Tambe.

Explaining the motive behind the crime, Ramrao Pawar, additional commissioner of police, said: “Jeetendra and Tambe were history sheeters. Though friends, they would give the police information about each other’s crime. Acting on a tip off given by Jeetendra, Tambe was arrested two years ago in connection with a robbery case in Nallasopara. Jeetendra too had been arrested in a theft case earlier based on information given by the victim.”

On the day of the incident, the brothers and Vinod had met for a drinking session in Charkop. After a little while, Jeetendra left to buy cigarettes.

“While alone, Tambe tried to convince Mahesh into having intercourse with him. When he refused, Tambe tried to force him. However, Jeetendra had returned by then. The brothers started beating the victim and finally smashed his face with a stone,” said Pawar.

They have been remanded to police custody, said the police.
