The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Thursday remanded two Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) employees to judicial custody. The duo was arrested for allegedly forging documents and misappropriating around Rs85 lakh.
The CBI Anti Corruption Wing arrested KC Mohandas, general manager and Pradeep Mogha, former assistant general manager of MTNL following a complaint registered in August 2010. The CBI also arrested two distributors Ravindra Belloria and Praveen Agarwal, remanded in police custody for four days.
Special public prosecutor Kavita Patil told the court that the duo fudged documents for an MTNL scheme called ‘SIM-75’. Mohandas and Mogha allegedly submitted forged documents under fake names claiming they were customers wanting to enroll in the SIM-75 scheme. Several SIM cards were then activated for which the dealers Belloria and Agarwal claimed commissions.
The two MTNL employees were running the scam since 2008, the CBI claimed. “The estimated loss to MTNL is about Rs85 lakh,” argued Patil.
Defence counsel Satish Maheshinde contended the two were falsely implicated and they had filed for bail.
