Uddhav becomes Sena prez today

On the occasion of the 87th birth anniversary of late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Wednesday, his son and party executive president Uddhav will officially take over the reins as the party president at the national executive meet at the Sena Bhavan in Dadar.

Late Bal Thackeray will continue to be referred as the party chief.

According to sources, Uddhav’s son and Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray, who was inducted in the party in October 2010, is likely to get a party post. This could either happen on Wednesday or in the days to come as part of the reshuffle in the party.

The election commission has made holding national executive meetings mandatory for the party to continue to be recognised.
The Sena’s meet will be the first after the death of Bal Thackeray two months ago and hence will remain significant. The last national executive meet was held in 2008.

The Sena, like other parties, has primary members who are led by an elected team of office-bearers of the party executive, which is expected to be re-aligned at the meet. While the older members, mostly founding members of the party who are now in their 70s or 80s, will get an advisory role, the younger lot seen close to Uddhav Thackeray will be get senior positions, said sources.

“Though the party elections are just a formality, they will be held for the first time without Bal Thackeray. Also, in 2014, we have the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. Considering the huge anti-incumbency, we expect the party president to give us a roadmap. He might also send out a stern word for defectors,” said a senior Sena leader.
