Ulhasnagar building collapse victims to get compensation

The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) has announced compensation to the dead and injured in Tuesday’s Sheesh Mahal building collapse. The families of those who have died will receive Rs 5 lakh, while the injured will get Rs 50,000 each.

Ashok Rankhamb, commissioner, UMC, said, “I have ordered that the building be vacated at the earliest and have instituted an inquiry as well as an inspection of the building.

He said, “Nakhawa, a UMC agency, will inspect the structural stability of the building and submit a report.”

“Till then none of the families will be allowed to live in the building. We have also got the police to keep a watch around the building to ensure that,” he added.

In addition, the police have filed a case against the contractor who has been doing repair and waterproofing work on the fifth floor of the same building. DCP Sarang Awad said the police check the credentials of the contractor.

Rankhamb said that dangerous buildings were a big issue in Ulhasnagar and they had issued notices to all buildings that were built around 15 years ago.

Rankhamb said the response was dismal, so the civic body has decided to issue fresh notices after the current incident.
