Although there have been no reports of violence in the city, students from the northeast of the country recount feeling threatened on certain occasions. "In Mumbai Central, a group of men carrying bricks threatened to beat us up if we did not leave the city soon," said Jyotil Kanti, 18, a first year commerce student from Ambedkar College in Wadala.

Kanti was among a group of students who attended a meeting organised by the University of Mumbai on Saturday to dissipate apprehensions, if any, in the minds of students from the northeast after recent episodes of violence in Bangalore and Pune.

"With more than 65,000 brothers and sisters, the University of Mumbai is like your second home," Naresh Chandra, pro vice-chancellor of the university assured the gathering. Chandra said the university would hold a festival in December showcasing the different cultures of the northeastern states. The meeting was also attended by principals of several colleges.
