MUMBAI: College principals said difficulty in coping with the upgraded HSC syllabus, introduced four years ago to bring it on par with the CBSE syllabus, was the main reason why students performed poorly in the HSC exam.

“Earlier, bifocal subjects were considered scoring subjects. However, after the science and maths syllabus were upgraded to the CBSE-level, it has become difficult for students to cope with bifocals — physics and maths,” said Marie Fernandes, principal, St Andrew’s College.

They said there is an urgent need to upgrade the SSC syllabus before making any changes to the Class 12 syllabus. Education minister Vinod Tawde announced the HSC syllabus will be upgraded to meet the NEET standard.

“The SSC syllabus is primitive compared to that of the national boards. So, when students are faced with a higher-level syllabus in Classes 11 and 12, they are left baffled,” said Jyoti Thakur, former principal and executive co-ordinator, Jai Hind College.
