US team visits city’s nuke setups

A team from the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) on Thursday visited the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to explore possibilities for collaborations in the area of nuclear research and engineering.

A team from the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) on Thursday visited the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to explore possibilities for collaborations in the area of nuclear research and engineering.

BARC director RK Sinha termed the visit a “reciprocal” one.

“In 2009, we visited the Idaho laboratory. This year, they had an opportunity to visit India.”

Led by INL director John Grossenbacher, the team visited India’s 25-year-old research reactor Dhruva, Nuclear Waste Immobilisation Plant – where nuclear waste is converted into glass – and reactor engineering design departments related to Advanced Heavy Water Reactor.

The representatives also visited the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board to get an insight of its functioning and role in the nuclear establishment.

Both BARC and INL that is under the US Department of Energy’s research and development facility are part of an Indo-US working group.

“It was a formal meeting and no agreements have been signed,” said Sinha.
