The state had mooted the grading system along with credit and semester system. Professional colleges in the state already follow the grading system. This system will come into effect from the next academic year, along with the credit and semester system.

While many principals feel the system will be successful only if a common grading pattern is adopted across the country, some principals cheered for the change, saying grading is a global assessment standard.

While faculty members of the University of Mumbai said the state’s directive is in spirit, as it aims at cutting out the fight over every decimal, it is practically difficult to implement it.

“Grading is not only about converting marks. It is about continuous evaluation. It also has to be in sync with the credit and semester systems that all universities are in the process of implementing,” said a university official.

A committee has been set up to look into amending the Maharashtra Universities Act.
