Vet students continue boycott

Students had alleged that there were inadequate facilities and infrastructure for teaching at Goregaon. The college has now decided to teach undergraduates at Goregaon while taking fourth and fifth year students to Parel for practicals.

“We hope to solve this issue through this,” said Ashish Paturkar, associate dean of the college. “We are thinking of a solution keeping in mind the benefit of not just these students but also the future batches.”

Paturkar said he had spoken to the vice-chancellor of Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU), which the college is affiliated to, on Monday evening and would propose this solution to students and parents on Tuesday.

On Monday, around 300 undergraduate students continued to boycott classes at the institute, after beginning their protest on November 19.

A delegation of students and parents are likely to meet Madhukar Chavan, minister for animal husbandry, dairy development and fisheries on Tuesday.

On Sunday the students dispatched letters to the chancellor of the university, governor K Sankaranarayanan , the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and the vice-chancellor of MAFSU.

A letter with students ,written by the VCI in 2006 to MAFSU had stated that students at the Goregaon campus were “suffering for want of adequate facilities which are available at the Parel campus but not being utilised”, and recommended shifting all the students to Parel.
