Students pursuing polytechnic courses across the state will be able to take some of their lessons in virtual classrooms from the current academic year.

The state government has decided to take this recourse in order to overcome faculty shortage in the stream.

"We are starting virtual classes from this academic year which will enable two or more classes to go on simultaneously," Higher and Technical Education Minister, Rajesh Tope said. Students can learn using facilities such as video conferencing. The government is also planning to make the facility available for Industrial Training Institutes, if required, Tope said.

The government will soon make available the required instrumental set up to the colleges to start the courses immediately, he added. There are more than 100 polytechnic colleges across the state.

"The virtual classroom has been initiated considering the shortage of teachers for polytechnic courses," the minister said. Faculty recruitment is carried out through Maharashtra Public Service Commissions that take a long time to fill the vacancies, he said.
