However, the police said their statement cannot be fully depended on, as they are too young to recall the events and are also changing statements. The children, who are the eyewitnesses in the case, were playing with Chavan, said police.

The police have detained a few people for questioning. The police have beefed up the security in the area. Iqbal Shaikh, assistant commissioner of police (Colaba division), said: “We have taken the statements of the children but we have to authenticate their version. We have formed a special team to probe the murder.”

Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik conducted a closed-door meeting that was attended by Cherring Dorje (DCP, zone I) and officers of unit I of the Mumbai Crime Branch. Shaikh said, “We are putting in all efforts to crack the case.”
