What next for the Congress leader?

After the police team finish their searches and seize the movable assets and attach the immovable assets — the 19 properties listed in the public interest litigation by social activist Sanjay Tiwari — of senior Congress leader Kripashankar Singh and his family, they will begin investigations to determine whether all these are in commensurate with Singh’s income as a public servant since 1998.

Singh was a minister of state in the Maharashtra cabinet in 2004, and in the 2009 Assembly elections, Singh won from the Kalina constituency. He resigned as city Congress chief on February 22.

His family members, who are alleged to have been beneficiaries of Singh’s largess and mentioned as abettors in the disproportionate assets case, will also have to explain the sources of their income vis-a-vis the property they have amassed.

If anyone of them attempts to evade the probe, the police can arrest them.

The decision to make an arrest is largely the discretion of the investigating officer.

Based on the final outcome of the investigation, city police commissioner Arup Patnaik will prepare a report and submit it to the Bombay high court on April 19, as ordered by the court.
