Soon after the robbery of valuables worth Rs77 lakh at Mangaldeep jewellers in Vikhroli (east) in May 2011, Gujrat Kalani’s accomplices told everyone that Kalani had lost his sanity.
Kalani’s accomplices allegedly kept him tied to a bed for a few months. Thereafter, they sent him to a mental hospital. This is how Kalani and his family did not arouse the police’s suspicion for eight months till the Vikhroli police received a specific tip-off about Kalani’s involvement in the robbery.
The police later checked with the mental hospital staff, who told them Kalani was in a perfectly sound condition.

Following this revelation, the police questioned Kalani.
“We interrogated Gujrat, who has a criminal record, following the tip-off and he admitted to the dacoity. He had handed over the booty to his mother, Suraj, following which we arrested her as well,” said an officer from Vartak Nagar police station, where the case was registered.
