With a week to go, this is already Mumbai's wettest June ever

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said more isolated spells of heavy rainfall are expected over the next 48 hours.

July is still seven days away, but this is already Mumbai’s wettest June on record. Since the start of the month, 1038.6mm of rain has been recorded in the suburbs. This is 702.8mm above normal, easily surpassing the 10-year high of 1029.8mm, recorded over the whole month in 2013, and edging out the all-time high of 1037.1mm in June 1971.

Meanwhile, 827.8mm of rain has been recorded in south Mumbai since the start of the month, which is 459.2mm above normal.

According to IMD officials, between 8.30am and 8.30pm on Tuesday, Colaba received 20.8mm of rain while Santacruz got 50.6mm.

“Currently, there are fewer clouds over the coast of Maharashtra as the monsoon has advanced north. However, we expect currents and winds to bring a lot of moisture to Mumbai and there will be isolated spells of heavy rain over the next 48 hours,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, IMD. The humidity level was 92% in both in Colaba and Santacruz on Tuesday.

Owing to Tuesday's downpour, day temperatures decreased in south Mumbai and the suburbs. The temperature was 27.7 degrees Celsius, 3.6 degrees below normal, in Colaba; and 27.9 degrees Celsius, 3.4 degrees below normal, in Santacruz.

Tuesday’s night temperature was at 25.6 degrees Celsius, 0.4 degrees below normal, in south Mumbai; and 24.9 degrees Celsius, 1.2 degrees below normal, in the suburbs.

Weathermen have predicted intermittent rain or shower in the city and suburbs accompanied by strong gusty winds, where one or two spells of heavy rain might occur in the next 24 hours. The forecast included maximum and minimum temperatures of 29 degree Celsius and 25 degree Celsius respectively for Wednesday.
