The Mumbai Taxi Chalak Malak Sena (MTCMS), the Shiv Sena’s taxi unit, has opposed the proposed strike by the Mumbai Taximen’s Union (MTU) on March 19 over the fare hike issue.

MTCMS said this was the wrong time for a strike. “We are not against a taxi fare hike, but students appearing for the SSC and HSC examination will suffer if cabbies go on strike,” said Nilesh Chavan, president, MTCMS. He has threatened to move the high court against the strike during the examinations. “We will not inconvenience students. It is against Shiv Sena’s policy,” he said.
The Sena said it would start a big agitation once the examinations were over. “We are going to demand a fare hike of Rs 22 for the first stage as insurance of taxis has risen sharply,” said Sunil Sathe, vice-president, MTCMS.
