In a bid to provide temporary relief to motorists, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued emergency instructions to contractors to start filling potholes despite the rain. Civic officials, however, admitted that such fillings would wear off quickly.

The BMC has issued a circular to its civic staff and contractors to fill potholes using road metal. Road metal is debris material, consisting of stones and construction material.

Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner, said, “We have been waiting for the rain to stop. However, looking at the intensity of the rain, we have decided to go ahead with temporary measures.”

For this, the city’s roads will be classified into two categories based on the number and the magnitude of potholes. “We have told contractors to fill potholes on roads that can’t wait for the rain to halt.”

Gupta said, “We had tried this one method that could be used to fill potholes effectively even if it rained. However, that too failed. We will have to rely on the conventional way of filling potholes with road metals.”
