The road commute to the international airport from south Mumbai will become shorter and smoother from October as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has started construction of the city’s first ever road underpass that will connect the Western Express Highway to the Sahar elevated road.
An MMRDA official said the 250-metre-long underpass will begin after the airport flyover towards north, go underground, turn towards right and emerge on the other side of the highway so one can avoid traffic jams on Sahar road to reach the airport.
Although the underpass will be completed by July, one will be able to use it only in October, when the Sahar elevated road will be ready for public use.
Dilip Kawathkar, project director (PR) of MMRDA, said, “We started construction of the underpass for Sahar elevated road a few days ago. We expect the construction to finish by July.” Over the course of the work, MMRDA needs a clearance from the civic body for the construction, and completion of the underpass may be delayed if it is not granted in time.
The underpass will acquire two lanes of the highway, for which the MMRDA has widened the roadway on the stretch. “We will use two lanes for entry to the underpass, so we have widened the highway to ensure smooth dispersal of the traffic going towards north. Although the underpass will be 250 metres long, the slopes on both sides will share major part of the underpass,” said a senior MMRDA official.
