Workers have head injuries: docs

On Tuesday, when a portion of the under-construction metro station collapsed, Sawai fell from the structure on a pile of concrete.

"My relatives warned me against coming to Mumbai, but I wanted to earn more money," said Sawai, who earlier worked at a construction site in Kolkata. Sawai has suffered back and waist injuries and is admitted to Cooper hospital.

The accident has left one dead and 16 injured, of which three are in critical condition. The injured were rushed to Seven Hills hospital in Marol, Paramount hospital in Saki Naka and Cooper hospital in Vile Parle.

Doctors at Seven Hills said Umesh Sahu, 35, was brought dead around 5.30pm. "He got crushed under the debris," said a doctor.

While Manoj has sustained a hip injury and is in Cooper hospital, his friend Purshottam Singh, 18, was lucky to have escaped with a minor injury on his waist.

"The labourers are between 20 and 50 years old. Most of them have sustained abdominal and head injuries. One patient has a spinal injury," said Dr Sagar Galwankar, chief, emergency medicine and trauma centre, Seven Hills.
