Yoga day: Colleges to cancel classes, conduct programmes

After the state government and University Grants Commission (UGC) told colleges it was compulsory to observe International Yoga Day on Tuesday, some have cancelled morning lectures in favour of yoga sessions, while others have informed students that college will begin earlier than usual.

“We will be conducting a one-hour programme at 9am, so we have decided to cancel the first two lectures. All the teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as students from different departments will participate,” said Ancy Jose, principal of Nagindas Khandwala College, Malad.

UGC circulars have been reminding universities and affiliated colleges to hold yoga-related activities on campus on June 21.

In the last circular dated May 16, the UGC suggested events that could be part of the 45-minute programme.

At Mithibai College in Vile Parle, students from NSS and NCC will lead the 7am yoga session.

“There will be an inauguration by the joint secretary of our management. Then, staff and students will participate in an hour-long programme. We have planned it well in advance and the students are looking forward to it,” said Rajpal Hande, principal.

“We have trained our volunteers over three days last week and invited people from neighbouring institutes as well,”said Dinesh Panjwani, principal of R D National College in Bandra.

“On Tuesday, our event will start at 9:30am. The students and staff have been invited to participate,” he added.
