You can go angling off Gorai coast soon

In a first for the city, the state government plans to turn the Gorai-Uttan-Manori coastal belt into a tourism and recreational zone with several activities for anglers.

Though the government has not set a time frame for the project, as it wants to seek suggestions from public, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Develop-ment Authority (MMRDA) is ready with a draft project report.

“The detailed project report of our plans is there for the public to view. We will move forward only after taking into account suggestions from the people on the report,” said Dilip Kawathkar, MMRDA joint project director.

The Gorai-Uttan-Manori region consists of five gaothans – Chowk, Pali, Uttan, Gorai and Manori – where the locals live by fishing. Opening up this coastline to tourists and organising fishing tours will boost the incomes of the locals too.

“Tourists can be given a feel of the fishing activities of the locals through guided fishing tours. Off-shore fishing could also be started,” states the project’s draft report prepared by the MMRDA.
