Stressing that the water is safe to drink, civic officials said the yellowish tinge could be because the water from the Upper Vaitarna dam was recently released after three months.

“So that the construction of the Middle Vaitarna project is not affected, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had stopped releasing water from Upper Vaitarna since monsoon. Now, as water has been released from Upper Vaitarna to Modak Sagar, it is causing the discolouration due to the iron and manganese oxidation process,” explained civic hydraulic engineer Vinay Deshpande, after mayor Shraddha Jadhav visited the Bhandup complex treatment plant.

“We have roped in experts to overcome this problem. The BMC officials are taking samples every three hours for testing, the results of which have shown that the water is safe to drink,” Deshpande added.

The BMC supplies water to the city from six lakes, including Upper Vaitarna and Modak Sagar (Vaitarna).

Both these dams are situated on the Vaitarna river basin and the proposed Middle Vaitarna dam is located between these two on the same basin.
