Youth carrying firearm, chloroform bottle held at Bandra terminus

A 19-year-old, who was carrying a country-made firearm and a bottle of chloroform, was arrested from the Bandra railway terminus subway on Friday, before he could board the Suryanagri Express for Rajasthan.

The Bandra government railway police (GRP) were checking passengers’ luggage at the terminus. When they asked accused Virmaram Devasy to show his backpack, he tried to escape. But policemen Yunus Pathan, Rajendra Gurav and Kishore Rajebhosale gave him a chase and caught him near the ticket counter. “His answers are evasive. He claims the seized items were given to him by his friends, but preliminary probe suggests he may have had plans to target commuters of the Suryanagri express,” said Anil Valzade, senior inspector, Bandra GRP.

Devasy, who hails from Barmer in Rajasthan, worked at a medical store in Bandra and was staying with a relative in Ghatkopar. The officials are checking if he had a criminal record.

A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Arms Act. Devasy has been remanded in GRP custody.
