Capture that high note

Concert photography sees its first ever group show in the Capital. Isha Manchanda writes.

They say wherever there is action, there is generally a battery of photographers to document it. Well, if the growth of the concert photography is anything to go by, the independent music scene in India must truly have arrived.

Last fortnight in Delhi, an exhibition titled Access All Areas opened with the works of five of Delhi’s best known photographers of live music. Shiv Ahuja, Asif Khan, Vijay Katé and the brothers Rahul and Rohit Lall are exhibiting their images in the first-ever group show for concert photography in the country.

“The group show is only an indication of the strong community of photographers shooting live performances in India and that is such an encouragement,” says Asif Khan. The photographs trace the evolution of not just the genre, but also the subculture of independent music. Whether it is images of the high points of a performance, or candid backstage shots, these images document the personal and professional journeys of some of the most important faces in the music scene.
