This monsoon, celebrate the spirit of the lovely weather with Malhaar — a three day long cultural festival which kicks off in the Capital tomorrow. Organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the festival will see performances by renowned Indian classical artistes such as Malini Awasthi, Hindustani vocalist Gundecha Brothers, Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan and Ghulam Abbas Khan, Pt Rajan and Sajan Mishra and Kathak dancers Sharmishtha Mukherjee and Aditi Mangaldas.

The festival, which is a decade old, is named after the Hindustani classical music form Raga Malhaar, which is sung to please the rain Gods. The festival will also see some cultural performances on this theme.

“Monsoon and Raga Malhaar have been associated with each other since decades. Legendary singers such as Tansen, Baiju Bawra and Baba Ramdas are known to sing the Raga. Also, there are many folklores attached to this,” says Suresh K Goel, Director General of ICCR. “The festival is one of its kind, as it’s a rare sight when such renowned artists perform on a common theme,” he adds.

The festival is an annual feature on the Capital’s cultural calendar. “It is the most sought after cultural event in the Capital,” Goel says.Here they are
