Hindi rock band Euphoria has never been a group to carelessly throw itself open to collaborations or even mainstream music. But earlier this year, when the 9-piece act was offered a Malayalam film to compose songs for, they took it up instantly. To them, it was a new way to venture into music they’d never dabbled in before.
Titled Best Of Luck, the movie came to happen when the producers bumped into front man Palash Sen at the airport. “They said they were making a Malayalam film and they wanted us to work on it. We have so much music within us, I thought we should give it a shot,” Sen says.
Much as they’d anticipated, the project turned out to be a logistical nightmare. The band was to write three songs for the film, and while they were composing to the north Indian meter, the lyrics were being fit to the south Indian meter. The songs were recorded fine, and have come to fall under what Sen classifies as ‘modern Malayalam music.’ “The lyricist did a good job with translating the words from English to Malayalam. We also called singers from Kerala, and it turned out to be a great experience,” he adds.
However, the movie tanked at the box office and, revolutionary as the music may have seemed, the soundtrack, too, was thrashed by music reviewers. Even so, the band has put up one of the songs, Best of luck, on their Facebook fan page where people can download it for free and decide for themselves. “We’d put up an intro to the song during Diwali and fans seemed to love it. Now, we’ve put it up for download on facebook.com/euphoria.dhoom. Another song, The dream song, will be up for download as a New Year’s gift for people,” Sen says.

{{/usCountry}}None of the members are discouraged by the reviews, and Sen maintains that collaborations will happen as and when the chances crop up. Presently, they’re focussing on their Facebook page, which went official in August this year and now has a fan count of around 29,000. “The point of putting these songs online is to acquaint other people with what Malayalam music can sound like. And it’s also for fans who’ve always supported us,” Sen adds.
