Slated to perform in Pune tomorrow at the Weekender music festival, and on November 24 at a city club, Imogen Heap is inviting Indian musicians to send her a video link on her website. She says, “I want to involve my fans and listen to their music as well.” But this is hardly the first time she’s using the internet for such an interaction. Earlier this year, her single ‘Lifeline...’ was put together with 900 pieces of sounds and words sent in by Twitter users.
Known for her distinct, electronic music and credited for adding a kaleidoscope of voices, beats and sounds to it, 34-year-old Imogen will headline the Dewarists Stage in Pune alongside Vishal Dadlani. She collaborated with him earlier this year on a track called ‘Minds without fear...’ for The Dewarists TV show. She will also perform alongside Indian classical flautist, Ashwin Srinivasan.
However, this isn’t Imogen’s first to India. “I first came to India fourteen years ago as a teenager to party in Goa. My second visit was for a weeklong holiday along with my boyfriend onboard the Maharaja Express. I saw the fancy side of India and was itching to see life around the train tracks; so we split up from the group, hired bicycles and explored a village in Rajasthan,” she says.
It was after that small vacation that she expressed the desire to work with Indian musicians and eventually got in touch with Vishal. “The concept of two musicians coming together from different walks of life in India intrigued me. That’s how I ended up spending four days in Rajasthan working round the clock with Vishal to create ‘Minds...’, a colourful soulful number,” she says. The song has her mouthing some Hindi lines as well, and she is excited to see how her Indian fans will react when they see her perform it live.

The musician who was also a panellist this year at the Nokia Music Connects forum, says, “The Indian experience” has inspired her music, adding, “I guess what I am striving towards is relevance. I want songs to be about this point in my life, something that inspires me. I love the Indian sense of humour, smells, colour, saris, music, voices, melodies and rhythm. And my experience with Vishal made me understand that I didn’t need to restrict myself anymore.”
