Indie music makes a comeback

Indus Creed, Lucky Ali and Rabbi Shergill return with new albums, get experimentative this time around.

If you were a rock fan who grew up in the eighties, chances are that you headbanged to songs like Rock’n’Roll Renegade… or Top of the Rock… performed by the five longhaired lanky guys that made up Rock Machine (the original band name of Indus Creed). Almost 16 years since their last release, the band, which shut shop in 1997, is back together again to work on their next album.

“Its great to be back. We never expected to return on the scene but didn’t rule it out either,” says Mahesh Tinaikar, the band’s guitarist. “Our new album will have eight to ten songs and it will be very different from what we have done before. Since a lot has changed in these years, in terms of songwriting, recording process to production, the album will reflect these new changes,” he adds.

Formed in 1984, Rock Machine was one of the earliest acts to tour across the length and breadth of the country, delivering power-packed performances at colleges and rock festivals. Their first album in 1988 could aptly be hailed as the birth year of independent rock music in the country. Their stature only grew further as they rechristened themselves as Indus Creed in 1993 and went on to rule the airwaves on MTV and Channel V.

Band vocalist Uday Benegal, keyboardist Zubin Balaporia and Tinaikar eventually re-grouped last year and teamed up with new members, bassist Rushad Mistry and drummer Jai Row Kavi. Indus Creed plans to release a three-song EP before the entire album is out, “The work is on and hopefully you will get to hear them soon,” says Tinaikar.
