Bred out of campus rock and (mis)guided teenage angst, Indian metal has finally come of age. From parttime college rockers to professional published artistes, the choppy riffs and incendiary vocals of Indian heavy metal bands now comes infused with greater wisdom. The sound is bigger and tighter than it ever was, which is why the global fan is taking notice. With scores of Indian bands breaching the world stage, the international press is also lending a ear.
Making a note of this, is the first word in metal music, Metal Hammer. The hugely popular UK based magazine has released a collection, Global Metal Compilation Volume 2, distributed with their March issue that includes tracks from ten Indian metal bands. The 15-track album has been distributed to countries all across the world, including the UK, USA, South East Asia and Eastern Europe.
The Indian bands that feature on the compilation include Bhayanak Maut, Scribe, Devoid, Sceptre, Albatross, Amogh Symphony and Heathen Beast from Mumbai. Also on the album is Skrypt from Hyderabad, The Circus from New Delhi and Slain from Bangalore. Riju Dasgupta, bassist of Albatross says, "It is a great stepping stone. I’m assuming from all the people who will get this CD, at least some will remember names from the album." Albatross’s In the court of Kuru… made the cut.
He adds, “CDs have become use-and-throw commodities, which makes magazines like Metal Hammer distribute them for free. It’s a good thing because it’s a great marketing device. People worldwide are now getting exposed to music that they may not hear otherwise,” says Dasgupta, who feels that endorsement by a magazine gives the acknowledgement that “this is good stuff and you should hear it.” Alexander Milas, editor of Metal Hammer, who visited India last year, had made the announcement at music conference, SoundBound: “Indian metal is gaining global interest. The sound is Indian-bred, which is great. We would be interested in featuring talent from here.”
