Almost every independent music artiste will tell you that getting their music out to people is probably one of their biggest ambitions. Making money may not be on everyone’s agenda, but if there is enough to be made, it only serves as icing on the cake.

Almost every independent music artiste will tell you that getting their music out to people is probably one of their biggest ambitions. Making money may not be on everyone’s agenda, but if there is enough to be made, it only serves as icing on the cake. Since most bands prefer to release their music online, the past couple of years have seen a surge in websites such as Artist Aloud and MyBand that offer indie music on sale through digital downloads.

Now, a new portal, Oklisten.com may just make things a lot more promising for music makers and listeners alike. The easily navigable portal has on board around 70 artistes, including Raghu Dixit and Sanjay Divecha, and bands like Blakc. Not only does it offer music albums comprising an average of eight tracks for as cheap as Rs.99, but it also shares a major part of its profits (70 per cent) with the artistes. Singles are available for Rs.15 and the ‘song of the week’ is a steal, coming at just Rs.5.

“Our business model is such that we get only 30 per cent of the profits. Also, our non-exclusivity policy allows artistes to freely distribute their music through other platforms as well,” says founder of the website, Vijay Basrur.
