A song by legendary British pop group, The Beatles, is what inspires a group of youngsters in the city to come together and make music.
Making the song, Hey Jude, their anthem, the group — Jammers United of Delhi Etc (JUDE) — meets at a café or a park in Hauz Khas, every fortnight, to sing with enthusiasm. “I was always fond of music while growing up. But during college, the pressure of studies took over. It’s great to jam together over the weekend and make some friends,” says Maniraj Singh, a 26-year-old software engineer.
Singh started jamming with friends Shashank Aggarwal and Shubham Khurana last October. Since then, the jam has grown to include more musical members, coupled with a strong presence on Facebook — with more than 500 fans on their page.
Some of the sessions are attended by 50 to 60 members. "We now have to take prior permission from the officials at the venue where we decide to jam, due to the high numbers," says Khurana. The jams attract a variety of participants that include trained singers, amateur musicians, music lovers and members of various bands. "The most interesting thing is the performance aspect of the jam. Everybody can sing along, instead of being mere spectators, as is the case at concerts," adds Singh.
One interesting feature of these musical gatherings is the incorporation of musical instruments — ranging from the guitar and drums to the djembe and violin. “Singing helps to express our emotions of love, joy, failure or rejection. It is fun and cathartic,” says Hemanshi Dawar, a college student, speaking about her experience at the sessions.
