Mikey McCleary’s passionate love affair with retro Bollywood takes a new turn every year.
If the last phase saw him consumed by classics featuring superstar Amitabh Bachchan, this chapter is testimony to his fascination for numbers from another era, even those that aren’t extremely popular.
The musician’s latest album — The Bartender’s Classic Bollywood With A Twist — is his third in the series of reinvented versions of oldies, and features hits like Aaj mausam bada beimaan hai (Loafer; 1973), Tum itna jo muskura (Arth: 1982) and Aaj ki raat koi aane ko hai (Anamika: 1973), among others.
At the album launch gig tonight, he will perform these numbers with his ensemble of musicians that, besides the core band, also features a live horn section, and four singers — Shalmali Kholgade, Anushka Manchanda, Shibani Dandekar and Saba Azad.
"I love listening to old Bollywood recordings. The beauty of these compositions and the lyrics are eternal. My goal is to give these songs new clothes that suit and enhance its beauty," says McCleary, who has delivered hits like Hawa hawai (Shaitan: 2011) and Dhak dhak (Nautanki Saala!: 2013).
