If you think that staying in Gurgaon has made you miss out on the happening cultural and music scene of the Capital, it is time to stop complaining. The city’s first public amphitheatre opens with a month long music festival called the Gurgaon Utsav today.
Sufi singer Madan Gopal Singh takes you to a world of love and dreams with his soulful rendition of Bulle Shah and Heer Ranjha in the evening. Accompanied by Deepak Castelino on the guitar, Mithilesh Jha, Pritam Ghosal and Zakir Dholpuri, the Chaar Yaar troupe plans to perform a mix of couplets by sufi saints like Rumi, Sultan Bahu and contemporary musicians like John Lennon from Beatles. A Hindi version of Lennon’s song, Imagine, by Singh, is particularly popular with youngsters. “Being a resident of Gurgaon, it is my contribution towards making the city more culture-friendly,” he says.
Qawwalis have been the latest fad after the Kun Faya number from Rockstar. Following the 800 year old tradition, Qutbi Brothers from Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki Dargah will sing popular qawwalis by Hazrat Ali like Chaap Tilak and Maula Ali, followed by an original composition Piya Bin Kaise Chain Paun, a medley of couplets by different sufi saints.
“I am a big fan of sufi music. I’m glad that I will be able to attend Madan Gopal Singh’s performance free of cost,” says Simran Kaur, an HR professional in the city. The festival will be continued with a Dastan-e-Goi act by Danish Husain and Mahmood Farooqui on April 7 and a musical performance by Jazz singer Sonam Kalra on April 28.

{{/usCountry}}The festival has been put together by I am Gurgaon (a city-based NGO), along with ARTs (an organisation promoting theatre and music) and the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon.
“We hope to organise many such music and theatre gigs at the amphitheatre in future,” says Lalita Thukral, founder, I am Gurgaon.
