The season of music festivals and arena concerts is upon us. And in the next few days, Mumbai will play host to some of the most renowned names in electronic dance music (EDM). While Dutch artiste Hardwell will spin his brand of house and electro today (September 22) at an open-air venue, British DJ Mat Zo will perform on September 26 as part of his four-city tour in India. Already, on September 20, EDM fans in the city came out in support of UK-based underground dance music pioneer Darren Emerson.
With dance music being the rage in India as well as around the globe, here’s what these international artistes feel about the trend.
Your view on the exploding EDM scene in India.
Hardwell: I think it’s fantastic! India has quickly become one of the most important countries in the world for dance music and I’m so proud to be staging my I Am Hardwell shows in the country.
Darren: To be honest, this is something I am interested in learning more about from my time in India.
What are the recording projects you are working on currently?
Hardwell: I have a new collaboration with MAKJ called ‘Countdown’ which is coming up on my Revealed Recordings label. I also have a remix out on Toolroom records which is of Mark Knight and Funkagenda’s ‘Man with the red face’. I have a new solo track probably coming out in November.
Darren: I’m carrying on touring, DJing and producting for my label Detone, and as The White Lamp, with some cool releases coming up on Bedrock, Hotflush, Sonar Kollektiv to name a few.
What are the three big changes you have seen in EDM in the past few years?
Hardwell: Lots of new and exciting young DJs are pushing through the scene which is great. More and more amazing festivals and some absolutely jaw-dropping production and, obviously, the explosion of dance music, not just EDM, around the globe.
Darren: Firstly, new interpretations of terminology are being used to describe sub-genres of house and techno (such as progressive-house, tech-house or deep-house, meaning different things to different generations). Secondly, technology (particularly DJing, from laptops to USBs/SDs and the evolution of hardware). And thirdly, seeing a lot of the original leaders making progress under various aliases.
