Think the one thing that keeps the world going around is pop music… in all its forms. In my lifetime, I have come to believe that all music is pop music. Beethoven was the popstar of his time, Elvis the popstar of his, and so on and so forth. Because at any given point in time, most musicians create music of their time, with their personal sensibilities, that they hope will be liked by the general mass of people. Now that large mass is very, very relative. And it should not be compared, ever.Pop equals popular
For instance, is Pandit Ravi Shankar a pop star? Yes he is. Because millions of people have heard him play and appreciate his music. Conversely, is Lata Mangeshkar a popstar, yes she is, for the same reasons. Pop has no age — Bob Dylan, Cliff Richard, Susan Boyle Tom Jones and Mick Jagger among many others are the oldest popstars we
know!
Similarly I would even put ‘rock’ legends like Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, James Brown as hugely successful popstars because they appealed to the mass populace through their genre of music, which was the pop music of their time.
Jazz was the pop music of the ‘30s and the ‘40s, Rock n roll was the popularity of the ‘50s, and consequently the multi-genres of rock became the norm through the ‘60s and the ‘70s. And the resulting ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s have been the same. So thereby I conclude that all music is pop music and shall continue to be so…if I may say so.
