Meet the city-based band, MiR, that churns out some lilting sufi rock tunes

The USP of the band MiR is their unconventional instruments and their unique genre of music — Indi blues sufi music. The lead vocalist of the band, Ankit Chawla, tells us what makes them click.

What sort of music can we expect from the band?
Our music is Indi blues sufi, in which, we try to bring in the mystical charm of sufi music coupled with beats that are rustic and earthy. We use instruments such as the tabla, dholak and djembe, paired with Persian guitars.

How did the band come together?

The band was formed three years ago. It was an Indian classical band initially. Later, a few members of another band, Tapas, joined us and brought in the rock element.

Why this name?

What do you think people remember most about your gigs?

Our use of interesting instruments is something that our audience really remembers about our gigs. We pair different instruments to bring in variety not only in our beats, but also to create a different feel.

What’s your key genre? What do you think about sufi rock?

We are primarily an Indi blues sufi band. For us, sufi rock was the way our band came together. We thought that both these genres of music, which might seem completely different, had interesting individual elements that when combined could create magic.

What do you think of the music scene in Delhi?

The music scene in Delhi is live and bustling. The number of bands and artists that you see performing here is amazing. Apart from artists coming from different parts of the country, international artists also bring in vibrancy to the Capital time and again.

If you could play at any gig in the world, it would be...

We would love to perform at the Download Music Festival in England.
