From being the lead singer of her school band and winning solo competitions to performing at Delhi’s popular music cafes with bands like Cyanide and White Beryl, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya has has made a mark for herself in Delhi’s music circuit.
The 18-year old has been learning Hindustani Classical music (Benaras gharana) from the last eight years but her expertise, however, lies in western music in which she has no formal training.
Bhattacharya is a Jazz, Broadway and soul singer. “My fondness for western music came from my friends and school teachers. I realised that all of them were way too inclined towards western music and this encouraged me to try out this genre,” says Bhattacharya, who is also the daughter of artist Sanjay Bhattacharya.
She will soon perform live in the Capital along with Brett Hanson from England on vocals with Aching Shaiza on piano.
At this show titled, Someone to Watch Over Me, Bhattacharya will sing Phantom of the Opera, Annie Get Your Gun, Guys n dolls, Snowboat, Oklahoma and more. About her selection of songs, she says, “These songs are by jazz legends. Their songs aren’t just soulful and endearing but also extremely challenging to perform. They are also very expressive and have some great duets. So, there’s something for everyone at this concert.”
Bhattacharya will soon be joining the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston this fall, where she previously attended summer programs. “I want to learn and have more music exposure. I hope to be trained perfectly at Berklee. I also wish to join a band there or become a famous artist. Of course, I will come to India, but I want to come back with experience,” she says.
