Despite the premature shutter downs and constant license and neighbourhood irks, some corners of Bandra’s party joints are just getting a fresh lease of life. Rooftop Café, the namesake of the rooftop bar on the sixth floor of the hotel, Executive Enclave, in Pali Hill, is celebrating live gigs every weekend.
Called Supercharged Sundown, every Sunday, partygoers and music lovers will sit down and break-open a pint of beer over a live unplugged session followed by a DJ night. “The idea is to promote original talent and offer the fatigued weekend party goers that last bit of entertainment just before Monday begins,” explains Sushil Cherian, from Bombay Elektrik Projekt, who organise the event.
The first night witnessed female singer-songwriter Ashima Aiyer and female Russian DJ Phabi D bring down the sun before a full crowd. “We are promoting new talent and offering people alternative entertainment,” says Cherian. The venue will also be hosting open mic nights where people, other than singers, can come and display their talent. “We are also exploring the option of band nights during weekdays,” adds Pramod Sippy, director, Bombay Elektrik Projekt.

Aiyer, who sang at the first Sundown, regaled audiences to some Norah Jones and Dave Mathews Band covers, besides her original jazz songs. Phabi D brought the house down with her fun and quirky trance-techno spins. But unlike other events in Bandra, which encourage free walk-ins, this will be a ticketed event and is priced at Rs 200 cover. “It’s to filter the crowd and make sure the people coming in are here for the music and are willing to pay for their entertainment,” reasons Cherian.

Post the grand Bandra crackdown, where most places shut shop, Café Rooftop is bringing the crowd back to the suburb. We hope they’ll keep spinning.
