City metal band’s first video is also a tribute to Dharavi B-boys.

Every evening, a posse of boys from Dharavi, dressed in loose jeans and hip hop gear, gather inside an abandoned mill compound to indulge in some freestyle B-boying. Their skill is evident: it is refined to the standard of movie dancers. This motley crew of some 20 odd boys is the muse of a heavy metal music video.

Scribe, the city’s most prolific metal heads, released their first music video of their second album Mark of Teja, at Blue Frog yesterday.

Dum Hai To Aage Aa

was filmed around the antics of these B-boys. The is stitched together with montages of the boys b-boying and dancing to Bollywood tracks with typical movie dance steps interspersed in their routine.

, because the song is essentially about showing your metal and creating a statement,” says Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy, the vocalist and co-composer of Scribe.

“We are a bunch of obscure boys. Our music is derived from whatever we see around us and what inspires us,” adds Krishnamoorthy. The band made the music videos themselves since Krishnamoorthy and fellow band-mate, Srinivas Sunderrajan on bass, are also independent filmmakers.

Live antics

Their show at Blue Frog had them screening visuals live to the tracks they were playing. “We’ve always had at least two female fans, so we played a track dedicated to them called Street Archana vs Vice Varsha that had visuals of chick fighters from video games. Then for Mpower, we had visuals of Contra playing on the screen and Etherea had He-Man make an appearance. We basically took on everything pop,” says Krishnamoorthy.
