Singing out of the box

Judged the Best Band at Malhar and Kaleidoscope, Spud In The Box looks forward to recording originals, playing gigs.

It was a rather interesting meeting that led to the formation of city band Spud In The Box. Says keyboardist Rohan Rajadhyaksha, “The band vocalist Ankit Dayal and I did not really know each other, but we both had been playing early sets at Blue Frog independently. Last year at Malhar, we bumped into each other in the washroom and decided to do something together.”

Adds Ankit, “The band actually came out of necessity, because there were offers for gigs but no set line-up. After playing three gigs with the same set of people, we decided to form an act together.” Besides Ankit and Rohan from Jai Hind College, Spud In The Box comprises college mates Vivaan Kapoor on drums, Zubin Bathena on bass and Hartej Sawhney on lead guitar.

Earlier this year, the band gained recognition and popularity for their performances at Bandstand Revival Festival and Blue Frog. Recently, the folk/pop-rock outfit also bagged the Best Band prize at St Xavier's fest Malhar and won a gig at Blue Frog.

Having had a “helluva year”, as Ankit says, Spud In The Box is also looking forward to recording their originals. Currently, they have two original songs uploaded on Facebook and Reverbnation — ‘Simple as it seems…’ and ‘Good way to die…’ Says Ankit, “Besides these, we have other acoustic/singer-songwriter material. We are working at shaping them up as songs that can be played by the whole band,” adding, “The focus right now is to play gigs, develop a chemistry and gather experience on stage.”
