Strings has dabbled with Bollywood before. The Pakistani pop band comprising Bilal Maqsood and Faisal Kapadia last composed a song Aakhri alvida… for Shootout At Lokhandwala back in 2007. But now, they’ll be composing most of the songs for the film’s sequel titled Shootout At Wadala, thus making it their biggest Bollywood project yet.
“This is going to be a dream project. As composers, we always want to challenge ourselves to explore new musical spaces. Now, we have a chance to do so. Since we are doing most of the film’s songs, the canvas is huge,” says vocalist Kapadia.
According to the band, songs in the upcoming film will range from slow, romantic numbers to a hardcore qawwali too. “There will be songs close to our own genre, but that will be only 25 per cent of the whole soundtrack,” Kapadia says, adding, “All the melodies are sounding really nice. And since India has a lot of talent, we would definitely want to work with our Indian friends. We’ll be coming to Mumbai soon to finalise all the singers and arrangers.”
And by ‘soon’, Strings would actually have preferred it earlier than later, for the band was scheduled to feature in the Indian edition of the MTV Unplugged music series that went on air earlier this month. “Everything was done, we got the visas and were ready to fly to Mumbai. We were excited and looking forward to the session, but unfortunately, MTV decided to go ahead without us at the last moment,” Kapadia says. Having recently released two singles, Mein tou dekhoonga… and Ab khud kuch karna paray ga… that were political outbursts meant for Pakistan, the band is in no immediate hurry to work on an album. “Albums are a waste of time these days. No one buys them anymore. Our plan is to keep on releasing singles. Every two to three months, we’ll come out with a new song that will be available on the internet for free,” Kapadia says.
